49: Only Aaron and his descendants served as priests. They presented the offerings on the altar of burnt offering and the altar of incense, and they performed all the other duties related to the Most Holy Place. They made atonement for Israel by following all the commands that Moses, the servant of God, had given them.
Exodus 30:10
- "Once a year Aaron must purify the altar by placing on its horns the blood from the offering made for the atonement of sin. This will be a regular, annual event from generation to generation, for this is the LORD's supremely holy altar."
- And the LORD said to Moses,
- "Whenever you take a census of the people of Israel, each man who is counted must pay a ransom for himself to the LORD. Then there will be no plagues among the people as you count them.
- His payment to the LORD will be one-fifth of an ounce of silver.
- All who have reached their twentieth birthday must give this offering to the LORD.
Leviticus 4:20
- following the same procedure as with the sin offering for the priest. In this way, the priest will make atonement for the people, and they will be forgiven.
Exodus 27:1
- "Using acacia wood, make a square altar 7 1/2 feet wide, 7 1/2 feet long, and 4 1/2 feet high.
- Make a horn at each of the four corners of the altar so the horns and altar are all one piece. Overlay the altar and its horns with bronze.
- The ash buckets, shovels, basins, meat hooks, and firepans will all be made of bronze.
- Make a bronze grating, with a metal ring at each corner.
- Fit the grating halfway down into the firebox, resting it on the ledge built there.
Exodus 30:1
- "Then make a small altar out of acacia wood for burning incense.
- It must be eighteen inches square and three feet high, with horns at the corners carved from the same piece of wood as the altar.
- Overlay the top, sides, and horns of the altar with pure gold, and run a gold molding around the entire altar.
- Beneath the molding, on opposite sides of the altar, attach two gold rings to support the carrying poles.
- The poles are to be made of acacia wood and overlaid with gold.
Exodus 29:33
- They alone may eat the meat and bread used for their atonement in the ordination ceremony. The ordinary people may not eat them, for these things are set apart and holy.
Job 33:24

Hebrews 7:11
- And finally, if the priesthood of Levi could have achieved God's purposes--and it was that priesthood on which the law was based--why did God need to send a different priest from the line of Melchizedek, instead of from the line of Levi and Aaron?
- And when the priesthood is changed, the law must also be changed to permit it.
- For the one we are talking about belongs to a different tribe, whose members do not serve at the altar.
- What I mean is, our Lord came from the tribe of Judah, and Moses never mentioned Judah in connection with the priesthood.
Exodus 29:36
- Each day you must sacrifice a young bull as an offering for the atonement of sin. Afterward make an offering to cleanse the altar. Purify the altar by making atonement for it; make it holy by anointing it with oil.
- Make atonement for the altar every day for seven days. After that, the altar will be exceedingly holy, and whatever touches it will become holy.
Leviticus 1:5
- Then slaughter the animal in the LORD's presence, and Aaron's sons, the priests, will present the blood by sprinkling it against the sides of the altar that stands in front of the Tabernacle.
Joshua 1:1
- After the death of Moses the LORD's servant, the LORD spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses' assistant. He said,
Numbers 16:16
- And Moses said to Korah, "Come here tomorrow and present yourself before the LORD with all your followers. Aaron will also be here.
- Be sure that each of your 250 followers brings an incense burner with incense on it, so you can present them before the LORD. Aaron will also bring his incense burner."
- So these men came with their incense burners, placed burning coals and incense on them, and stood at the entrance of the Tabernacle with Moses and Aaron.
- Meanwhile, Korah had stirred up the entire community against Moses and Aaron, and they all assembled at the Tabernacle entrance. Then the glorious presence of the LORD appeared to the whole community,
- and the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
Deuteronomy 18:1
- "Remember that the Levitical priests and the rest of the tribe of Levi will not be given an inheritance of land like the other tribes in Israel. Instead, the priests and Levites will eat from the offerings given to the LORD by fire, for that is their inheritance.
- They will have no inheritance of their own among the Israelites. The LORD himself is their inheritance, just as he promised them.
- "These are the parts the priests may claim as their share from the oxen and sheep that the people bring as offerings: the shoulder, the cheeks, and the stomach.
- You must also give to the priests the first share of the grain, the new wine, the olive oil, and the wool at shearing time.
- For the LORD your God chose the tribe of Levi out of all your tribes to minister in the LORD's name forever.
Leviticus 1:7
- the sons of Aaron the priest will build a wood fire on the altar.
- Aaron's sons will then put the pieces of the animal, including its head and fat, on the wood fire.
- But the internal organs and legs must first be washed with water. Then the priests will burn the entire sacrifice on the altar. It is a whole burnt offering made by fire, very pleasing to the LORD.
Numbers 15:25
- With it the priest will make atonement for the whole community of Israel, and they will be forgiven. For it was an unintentional sin, and they have corrected it with their offering given to the LORD by fire and by their sin offering.
Leviticus 21:1
- The LORD said to Moses, "Tell the priests to avoid making themselves ceremonially unclean by touching a dead relative
- unless it is a close relative--mother or father, son or daughter, brother
- or virgin sister who was dependent because she had no husband.
- As a husband among his relatives, he must not defile himself.
- "The priests must never shave their heads, trim the edges of their beards, or cut their bodies.
Leviticus 8:1
- The LORD said to Moses,
- "Now bring Aaron and his sons, along with their special clothing, the anointing oil, the bull for the sin offering, the two rams, and the basket of unleavened bread
- to the entrance of the Tabernacle. Then call the entire community of Israel to meet you there."
- So Moses followed the LORD's instructions, and all the people assembled at the Tabernacle entrance.
- Moses announced to them, "The LORD has commanded what I am now going to do!"
Deuteronomy 34:5
- So Moses, the servant of the LORD, died there in the land of Moab, just as the LORD had said.
